New York City is made up of five boroughs officially called "boroughs": Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Each "borough" coincides with a county in New York as you can see in the map of New York City boroughs: Manhattan with New York County, Brooklyn with Kings, Queens with Queens, the Bronx with the Bronx, and Staten Island with Richmond. Until 1898 the city of New York City was formed solely of the Manhattan borough. Although there was one elected politician per borough, his function was very limited. The management of the city is centralized at the New York City Hall.

 

Manhattan is a narrow island at the center of New York City five boroughs as its shown in the map of New York City boroughs. The borough of Brooklyn carries much of the cultural influence and weight of Manhattan, with a more relaxed vibe. The Bronx is home of the New York City Yankees, is the cradle of hip hop, and boasts the biggest park in the city. Queens is the easternmost borough of New York City, and geographically the largest of the five. The southernmost borough in New York, Staten Island is connected to Manhattan via ferry.
